The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officially received its first Bay Class patrol vessel from the Australian government Friday, which will be deployed to enhance maritime security mainly in the Straits of Malacca.

Spain has submitted a tender to supply Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to the Indonesian government, entering a bidding war with other producers of combat aircraft as the country seeks to beef up its military strength.

Indonesia has dedicated 7 percent of budgetary spending to defense over the past two years in an attempt to regenerate an aging military arsenal to both match regional powers and to secure the vast archipelago.

“The competition the Eurofighter is entering is for the replacement of the regular old combat aircraft that you [Indonesia] have,” Spanish Ambassador to Indonesia Francisco Jose Viqueira Niel said on Wednesday.

A further addition to the Royal Thai Army’s rotorcraft fleet has been committed with the acquisition of six Airbus Helicopters light-utility EC145 T2, which is the newest and most powerful model in Airbus Helicopters’ proven EC145 light twin-engine helicopter family.

The Royal Thai Army signed for six EC145 T2s with a VIP installation, under the Light Utility Helicopter Type II requirement, to be deployed principally on official passenger transport duties, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2016.EC645 T2

Malaysia, Laos agree to host Military Attachés

Kuala Lumpur and Vientiane have agreed to set up a military attaché post for both countries following a meeting yesterday between Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Lao Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong in Vientiane yesterday. Also present was National Defence Minister Lt-Gen Sengnouane Sayalat.

The meeting was aimed at further strengthening the existing bilateral relations, specifically in military and defence co-operation. Hishammuddin said he had made the request for a defence attache during his previous visit to the Lao capital on May 21 last year.

Indonesia’s squadron of Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets has a strange new mission—riding shotgun beside a transport plane hauling two Australian prisoners to an island prison where they could face a firing squad for smuggling drugs.

“The Indonesian military commander has given the order to assist the relocation of the two death defendants,” Maj. Gen. Torry Djohar said on Feb. 22. “A squadron of Sukhoi jet fighters will be prepared to escort the Hercules aircraft that will be used to transport the defendants. We will also deploy ocean patrol and land forces.”

Four US warships designed to fight in coastal areas similar to Southeast Asian waters will be operating out of Singapore by 2018, up from one currently, a senior US Navy official said Tuesday.

The "rotational deployment" of the vessels, called littoral combat ships (LCS), comes as China continues to flex its muscles in the South China Sea and tensions remain on the Korean Peninsula.

Elbit Systems of America, Fort Worth, Texas, was awarded a $13,185,756 modification (P00013) to foreign military sales contract W58RGZ-12-C-0164 (Indonesia) for 300 Apache Aviator Integrated Helmets. Fiscal 2010/2013/2014 other procurement funds in the amount of $13,185,756 were obligated at the time of the award. Estimated completion date is April 30, 2017. Work will be performed in Fort Worth, Texas. Army Contracting Command, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, is the contracting activity. (US DoD)
