Lockheed Martin Announces Indonesian Radar Industry Initiative

Lockheed Martin has launched an Indonesian radar industry initiative as part of its efforts to support the country's plans to modernize and extend its air surveillance coverage.

This initiative includes technology transfers to aid in the development of a new Indonesian radar industry, as well as partnerships with local universities to cultivate the workforce necessary to support it. Enhancing Indonesia'sability to make critical radar components will reduce the nation's reliance on foreign suppliers, while providing employment opportunities for its citizens.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) has to expedite upgrading the national defence radar system as some of the radars are more than 15 years old.

RMAF chief General Tan Sri Rodzali Daud said the matter had been discussed with the government.

In a development that could make the mystery surrounding the missing Malaysia Airlines plane more puzzling, the Indonesian Air Force has revealed that its radar in Sumatra, which is closest to Penang on the Malaysian Peninsula, did not detect any aircraft in the Malacca Strait area under its coverage, around the time Flight 370 was lost early last Saturday.

Unglamorous though they are, aerostats are carving a substantial niche in the airborne surveillance business. They come in all sizes, from 30 feet long and a volume of 2,500 cu ft, to a massive 242 feet and 590,000 cu ft. Unlike airships, they remain tethered to the ground, but the largest ones can fly as high as 15,000 feet. Here in the Middle East region, the U.S. military has used them extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gulf states, including the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, use them to monitor borders and airspace.

Berbagai alutsista sudah mulai berdatangan. Sebut saja mulai pesawat tempur, kapal perang, tank , panser, tank amfibi serta berbagai peralatan tempur lainnya. Di tahun 2014 ini ada satu alutsista yang rencananya akan datang yakni 4 radar baru yang akan memperkuat sistem pertahanan udara Indonesia.Hal ini tertuang dalam Rencana Strategis (Renstra) Kementerian Pertahanan 2009-2014.

Rilis tertulis Kepala Dinas Penerangan (Kadispen) TNI AU Marsma Hadi Tjahjanto pada hari Jumat 14 Februari 2014 menyebutkan, “Saat ini Indonesia memiliki 20 radar pertahanan udara yang tersebar di seluruh Indonesia yang terdiri atas jenis/merek Plessey buatan Inggris, Thomson buatan Prancis dan Master-T buatan Prancis. Marsma Hadi menambahkan , TNI AU akan terus membeli radar baru secara bertahap untuk menjaga wilayah udara tanah air.
