HMAS Larrakia departed the port of Sandakan, Malaysian Borneo, on September 22, after a two-day stopover.

The Armidale Class Patrol Boat, with Attack 4 embarked, is one week into a six-week South East Asian Deployment.

After the necessary refueling and restoring at Sandakan, the crew took in some of the cultural sights on offer in the city that was made infamous by the WWII death marches undertaken by allied prisoners of war.

“Despite our short time in Sandakan, we managed to squeeze a fair bit in,” said Lieutenant Commander Dave McPherson, Attack Four’s Commanding Officer.

“The tour of the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and the visit to the Sandakan Prisoner of War Memorial Gardens were by far the highlights of the visit,” he said.

Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships being built for the Australian Defence Force, has sailed on her final contractor sea trials before delivery to the Australian Government.

The ship departed Williamstown shipyard on 12 August as planned with the trials taking place in both Port Phillip Bay and off the southern coast of New South Wales before returning to Williamstown around the end of August.

Final contractor trials involve testing of the combat and communication systems along with some platform systems trials.

Director of BAE Systems Maritime, Bill Saltzer, said: “This is the last major element of a very complex and comprehensive test program to prove the capabilities of the ship and its systems prior to delivery to our customer.

“Getting this ship to this stage has been a collaborative effort between BAE Systems and the Defence Materiel Organization (DMO). Our two project teams have worked closely throughout the project and now we are in the home stretch for the Canberra.”

By: Ian McPhedran (www.news.com.au)

AUSTRALIANS will soon be able to own, and use, a slice of military history, as a huge sale of second-hand vehicles kicks off the largest disposal of defence equipment since World War II.

A vast range of war fighting kit from machine guns to jet fighters and torpedos to warships will eventually be sold.

Starting in March, up to 12,000 vehicles, including Land Rovers, trucks, semi-trailers, tankers, Unimogs, motorcycles and trailers valued at more than $100 million will be sold by Sydney-based firm Australian National Disposals, trading as Australian Frontline Machinery (AFM).

Most are about 25 years old with 125,000km on the clock and not a bullet hole in sight, in either khaki or a fetching camouflage paint scheme.

Artillery Systems 'Boom' in Asia

Local Production
We shall begin our regional survey by looking at indigenous capabilities. There are currently four countries self-sufficient in artillery system production - China, Japan, Singapore and South Korea, and we shall look at their offerings in turn.

As the world's largest armed force, and one that continues to rise at a stunning rate - for the coming year China announced a 12.2% hike in its defence budget to US $132 billion - the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is enamoured with SPH systems. In total, China owns 6,000+ towed artillery pieces and 1,700 SPHs. The PLA has traditionally operated Soviet 122mm, 130mm and 152mm artillery calibres, although its newest SPH is notable for being of 155mm calibre. This signals that China is switching over to 155mm for future designs. The system in question is the 35-tonne PLZ05 (Type 05) from NORINCO, which features an U52 gun. It can fire laser-guided munitions based on the Russian Krasnopol design, with the WS-35 round reputedly having a 1OOkm range.

Also new for the PLA is the 22.5-ton PLZ07 (Type 07) 122mm SPH introduced by NORINCO in 2007. China has also brought the PLL05 120mm mortar howitzer into service, this being based on a WZ551 6x6 chassis; it was first noticed deployed in 2008. China also has systems available for export, primarily through the state-owned firm NORINCO. China has sold PLZ45 155mm SPHs to Algeria, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, this type being a forerunner to the PLA's own PLZ05.

ALMOST 72 years after Japanese midget submarines attacked Sydney Harbour killing 21 sailors, Australia could buy Japanese subs for its $30 billion replacement program.

Possible access to Japanese technology and even a so-called “military off-the-shelf” deal to buy the boats is on the agenda during high-level defence talks in Tokyo betweenPrime Minister Tony Abbott and senior Japanese officials.

The Australian Navy violated Indonesian territorial waters six times between December and January as part of border security operations, an official report revealed Wednesday.

Canberra has previously only said its ships “inadvertently” violated Indonesian waters, without saying how often. It has formally apologized to Jakarta, which demanded Australia suspend its operations to deter asylum-seekers.

By: David Wroe (www.smh.com.au)

Australia scrambled an air force surveillance plane earlier this month to monitor an unannounced Chinese military exercise that took the emerging superpower's ships closer to Australian territory than ever before.

In what observers say is a significant strategic development, China carried out combat simulations at the beginning of the month between Christmas Island and Indonesia in an apparent flexing of its growing naval muscle.
