China has published a new map of the entire country including the islands in the South China Sea (West Philippine Sea) in order to “better show” its territorial claim over the region.

The government-run Xinhua news agency of China published photos of the map made by Hunan Map Publishing House and said in the caption “Islands in South China Sea share the same scale with mainland and are better shown than traditional maps.”

Boeing Co. (BA), the second-biggest defense contractor in the U.S., and Saab AB (SAABB)expect demand for maritime and aerial surveillance systems to grow in Asia as territorial disputes intensify.

Demand for maritime patrol craft and affiliated equipment in the Asia-Pacific region is expected to grow steadily for the foreseeable future, Chris Chadwick, head of Boeing’s defense business, said yesterday in Singapore. Boeing and Stockholm, Sweden-based Saab both manufacture aircraft used for maritime patrol and surveillance.

The Philippines’ military chief on Monday accused China’s coast guard of firing water cannon at Filipino fishermen for the first time to drive them away from a disputed sea shoal.

Gen. Emmanuel Bautista said Chinese vessels fired cannon on Jan. 27 near Scarborough Shoal — the subject of a bitter territorial row in the strategically important South China Sea.

On  February 4, 2014 the first batch of five Oplot main battle tanks arrived to the Kingdom of Thailand. Ukrainian tanks produced by the State Enterprise “Malyshevplant” arrived to the Port of Sattahip (Thailand) where they were discharged and directed to the place of acceptance testing. After the final testing by the Thailand side, the vehicles will be finally accepted under the terms of the contract.

PARIS — World defense spending will rise in 2014 for the first time in five years, a key study found Tuesday, driven by arms races in Asia and the Middle East, as well as a resurgent Russia.

The closely watched IHS Jane's Annual Defence Budgets Review said military budgets this year would inch up by 0.6 percent, after years of falls brought on by lower spending in the West.

"We have seen substantial increases in defense spending from countries like Russia, China, India, Saudi Arabia, and Oman over the past two years," said Paul Burton, Director of IHS Jane's Aerospace, Defence & Security.
