LONDON — BAE Chief Executive Ian King has killed off hopes the company might return to the negotiating table with the United Arab Emirates over the sale of Typhoon jets. “It’s done, we have no plans to revive it,” he told reporters in London Jan 22. King’s rebuff on the question of a possible revival of negotiation follows speculation the company could return to the table at a later date. Despite the apparent hard line, analysts said the prospect of a deal hasn’t entirely evaporated. By Agence France-Presse (www.defencetalk.com)

Taipei — Taiwan has said it plans to slash its armed forces by up to 20 percent from 215,000 over the next five years, in the latest sign of warming ties with former rival China. Defence Minister Yen Ming said the military would be cut to 170,000-190,000, but that defence capabilities would not be compromised in the project to build "smaller but leaner and more professional armed forces". With budgets slashed due to sequestration, the US Air Force is eyeing vertical cuts — the removal from service of single-mission aircraft to save money that can be invested toward readiness and modernization. One target is the A-10, a decades-old plane designed for close-air support (CAS) missions. But supporters of the plane have rallied against the service, and Congress inserted language into last month’s National Defense Authorization Act prohibiting the Air Force from cutting the platform. The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) has rejected proposals to unite with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in crafting a peace deal with the government. The MNLF, which signed a peace accord with the government on Sept. 2, 1996, said it is merely adhering to resolutions of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), adding that any of its dealings with Malacañang must be within the ambit of the existing tripartite body. The MNLF faction chaired by former Cotabato City vice mayor Muslimin Sema had said in an emailed statement that accepting the proposal of the government and MILF could be construed as an insult to the OIC. The contentious question of how many littoral combat ships to build has been batted back and forth this year between the US Navy’s top leadership and senior Pentagon leaders. By the end of the day on Jan. 17, a certain kind of standoff appears to have been reached, foregoing — for the moment — a final decision. The result could be a compromise. Reportedly, LCS is being put on something of a probation: The buy would be limited to 26 or 28 ships — the exact number couldn’t be confirmed by press time — but the ship will need to pass evaluation by the Pentagon’s Office of the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) before further ship buys can proceed, according to multiple Pentagon sources, who stressed that no final decisions have been reached.
